The development of varicose veins are extremely common, particularly in older age. Although venous conditions can affect many different areas of the body, the hands and legs are particularly at risk. In this post we’ll be looking at what causes varicose veins to appear, and what treatment options are available when they do. Our Los Angeles based clinic in Sherman Oaks has been providing the very best service to our patients, and we’re available for consultations, education, advice, and assistance with anything you might need to know.
Varicose Veins
As we’ve already mentioned, varicose veins are extraordinarily common, and many of us may experience them at some point. Heredity, ageing, weight gain all are causes of varicose veins. Elevated venous pressure and some vein valves become incompetent in our body, particularly places like our hands and legs, since they often pump blood uphill. Over time, pumping blood up from the hands or legs can cause a strain, and these results in veins swelling, usually with an associated colourisation in a bright blue, green, or red. Although treatment won’t be necessary in all cases, treatment is available, and should be sought if you experience pain, itchiness or a rash. If you experience an increase of any of these symptoms when being active / inactive, you should also seek treatment.
Varicose Vein Treatments
Sclerotherapy is the primary procedure used for smaller varicose veins, this treatment involves injecting a solution directly to the vein in order to shrink the vein. Once the vein has shrunk sufficiently, the body will simply absorb it.
For varicose veins in the legs, Ablation and Phlebectomy are good treatment options. Ablation is a minimally invasive procedure to seal the affected veins. Phlebectomy involves making a series of incisions through which the incompetent vein can simply be removed.
